South Tripura is an administrative district in the state of Tripura in northeastern India.
Belonia is a town and Municipal Council in South Tripura district, Tripura, India. It is also the headquarters of South Tripura District. It is linked with Agartala (the state capital) by National Highway 8 via Udaipur and also via Rajnagar, Sonamura, Melaghar, and Bishramganj. Belonia lies on a border with Bangladesh.
History
The district came into existence on 1 September 1970, when the entire state was divided into three districts.
Geography
The district occupies an area of 2152 km². The district headquarters are located at Belonia.
Divisions
District has three sub divisions (Belonia, Sabroom and Santirbazar).
The district resides in two Lok Sabha constituencies: Tripura West (shared with West Tripura district) and Tripura East (shared with Dhalai and North Tripura districts).
Demographics
According to the 2011 census South Tripura district has a population of 876,001, roughly equal to the nation of Fiji or the US state of Delaware. This gives it a ranking of 471st in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 286 inhabitants per square kilometre (740/sq mi) . Its population growth rate over the decade 2001–2011 was 14.03%. South Tripura has a sex ratio of 957 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 85.41%.
Flora and fauna
In 1987, South Tripura district became home to the Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, which has an area of 195 square kilometres (75 sq mi). It is also home to the Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary, which was established in 1988 and has an area of 390 square kilometres (150 sq mi).

Proposed railway station
A railway service in Belonia (code: BENA) serve upto Agartala (code: AGTL), Service started from February 2019.Right now Everyday(except Sunday) 2 Pairs of Train runs between Belonia and Agartala. The station lies on the Agartala - Sabroom rail section, which comes under the Lumding railway division of the Northeast Frontier Railway. The segment from Agartala to Sabroom via Udaipur may become operational in 2020, with a proposed elevation of 39m.
Integrated Check Post (ICP)
Railway station here at border of India will have Integrated Check Post for immigration and customs and will connect Indian railway network 120 km away with Chittagong port in Bangladesh via Feni.
Politics
Belonia assembly constituency is in the Tripura West Lok Sabha constituency.
