Jorhat is a city and one of the important urban centres in the state of Assam in India.
Jorhat is an administrative district of the Indian state of Assam situated in the central part of the Brahmaputra Valley. The district is bounded by Majuli on north, Nagaland state on the south, Charaideo on the east and Golaghat on the west. On the north of the district, the river Brahmaputra forms the largest riverine island of the world. The administrative seat is at Jorhat town.
Earlier Jorhat was a sub-division of undivided Sibsagar district. In 1983 Jorhat was carved out of Sibsagar District and was made a separate district.
Culture
Jorhat has been able to produce many creative writers, historians, journalists, et cetera. Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya, the first Assamese to win India's highest literature award, the Jnanpith Award, was from Jorhat.

Kamakhya Prasad Tasa (38) of the Bharatiya Janata Party is one of the youngest Indian politicians and a Member of Parliament serving the 16th Lok Sabha from Jorhat, Assam. Jorhat is home town to the previous Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi. The six-time sitting Congress M.P. Bijoy Krishna Handique was defeated by Kamakhya Prasad Tasa in 2014.
The M.L.A. from Jorhat assembly constituency is Hitendra Nath Goswami of the B.J.P., who won the seat in the State elections in 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2016.
